8. Use of Cookies and Other Tracking Devices

When you view one of our websites or interactive advertisements, we may use “cookies” to collect aggregate data. A cookie is a small text file stored on your computer that helps us in many ways to make your visit to our website more enjoyable and meaningful to you. For example, cookies avoid you having to log in every time you come back to one of our websites. They also allow us to tailor a website or advertisement to better match your interests and preferences.

There are a couple different types of cookies. A “session” cookie is stored only in your computer’s working memory (RAM) and only lasts for the length of your browsing session. When you close all of your browser’s windows, or when you shut down your computer, the session cookie disappears forever. A “persistent” cookie is stored on your computer’s hard drive until a specified date, which could be tomorrow, next week, or ten years from now. Persistent cookies stay on your computer until a) they expire; b) they are overwritten with newer cookies; or c) you manually remove them. Most web browsers can be configured not to accept cookies. However, this may prevent you from having access to some of our website’s functions or features.

We may use clear GIF Tracking pixels to track user movement through the site for aggregated site traffic metrics. In addition, some affiliates may set tracking pixels to track requests referred by their websites.

We may also use web beacons to compile aggregate data. A web beacon is a programming code that can be used to display an image on a webpage but can also be used to transfer your unique user identification to a database and associate you with previously acquired information about an individual in a database. This allows us to track certain websites you visit. We beacons are used to track online behavioral habits for marketing purposes to determine products or services you may be interested in. In addition to using web beacons on web pages, we may also use web beacons in email messages sent to individuals listed in our database.

Most browsers are set to accept cookies and other trackers by default. If you prefer, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove cookies and to reject cookies. If you choose to remove cookies or reject cookies, this could affect certain features or services of our Services.

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this privacy notice.
